7 Days Rongai Route

Tour Highlights

  • The 7-day Rongai Route on Mount Kilimanjaro offers a remote and secluded trekking experience.
  • Rongai route is one of unpopular routes up Kilimanjaro, the route is well known for its beautiful scenes than Marangu route, much easier than the Machame route and the rate for a successful climb is very high.
  • Suitable for beginner to intermediate trekkers with no technical equipment or experience required.
  • A low traffic route starting from the remote north and descending via Marangu.
  • It is probably the only route where seeing wildlife in the first days is possible.

  • Elevation: 8,610ft to 11,420ft
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave Camp located in the moorland zone with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

  • Elevation: 11,420ft to 11,910ft
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Today’s hike takes you further through the heather & moorland zone diverting towards the third peak of Kilimanjaro on the south east of the massif and one that is rarely climbed. The landscape changes from the morning and you stop near the Kikelelwa caves for your nights camp.

  • Elevation: 11,910 ft to 14,140 ft
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views of this wilderness area. The vegetation zone ends shortly before you reach your next camp at Mawenzi Tarn spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area.

  • Elevation: 14,140 ft to 15470 ft
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Your hike today takes you back towards the Kibo cone steadily climbing up and over the edges of the alpine desert journeying through the ‘saddle’ between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The environment becomes more barren and air thinner as you ascend to your base camp where you will rest for the summit journey starting tonight.

  • Elevation: 15,470 ft to 12,220 ft
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Hiking Time: 14-18 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

At around midnight our crew will wake you up to some light tea and biscuits and will make a move into the night. From there it’s about 45 minutes to the long-awaited Uhuru peak. Congratulations!! Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Africa and an achievement you will live to remember the rest of your life. Then walk back to Kibo hut from the summit, it should you about 3 hours to get there. Have a short rest and collect the rest of your gears before heading down to Horombo Hut.

  • Elevation: 12,220 ft to 6,100 ft
  • Distance: 17 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner descent bed and celebrations!!
