Northern Circuit Route

The Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route is a relatively new and highly recommended trekking route that provides an unforgettable experience on Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers stunning scenery, tranquility, and a high summit success rate, making it an ideal choice for adventurous hikers. This Route stands out for its picturesque and peaceful journey, as it ascends the western slope of Kilimanjaro, which is less crowded compared to other routes. This allows trekkers to enjoy the natural beauty and serenity of the northern face of the mountain, with very few other groups encountered along the way.

As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit offers ample acclimatization time, which is crucial for a successful summit attempt. The gradual ascent and extended duration of the trek significantly improve the chances of reaching the summit and reduce the risk of altitude-related illnesses. This makes the Northern Circuit Route the route with the highest summit success rate. The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, where the trek officially starts. The first two days are spent trekking through the enchanting rainforest until reaching Shira Ridge. From there, the route continues across the vast and scenic Shira Plateau. Heading north, the trek circles clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp and then to School Hut before finally summiting from the east.

The descent from the summit is made via the Mweka route, providing a varied and fulfilling trekking experience. The Northern Circuit Route showcases the diverse landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro, including lush rainforests, expansive plateaus, and the quiet and rarely visited northern slopes. Compared to other popular routes like the Lemosho route, the Northern Circuit offers a distinctive advantage. It follows a northern loop, allowing hikers to experience a wider range of mountain vistas and panoramas. The route combines the best aspects of different approaches, making it a highly sought-after choice for organizers, mountain guides, and hikers alike.

Overall, the Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route is a well-regarded and rewarding trek that offers an immersive and awe-inspiring experience. With its breathtaking scenery, peaceful surroundings, ample acclimatization time, and high summit success rate, this route is highly recommended for those seeking an unforgettable adventure to the roof of Africa.

Frequently Asked
Question

Kilimanjaro is climbable all year round. The best months to climb are December-march, and September October, which are the warmest and driest months. The next best is June to august, but they are colder. July, august, and September are the busiest months. Summiting on or soon after a full moon is very beautiful and helps illuminate the landscape without using headlamps. However, it is also very bright for sleeping and stars are not as visible.

Malaria is a serious problem in east Africa so you must consult your doctor about getting effective malaria prophylaxis for your visit. Many people are avoiding lariam nowadays and using malarone. You cannot catch malaria above 3000 meters on Kilimanjaro, but you must be careful below that altitude, particularly if you visit the coast where the strains of malaria tend to be especially virulent.

Temperatures range from 25 to 30 degrees celsius at the foot of the mountain and -15 to -20 degrees celsius on top plus wind chill. Lower down, it can be wet and humid, but higher up, there can be snow. Rain and snow may be encountered any time of the year!

It requires no technical climbing experience, and any moderately fit person can summit the mountain.

Your decision will depend on where you want to sleep and the hiking distance each day and number of days of each route. On the Marangu route, you sleep in huts with simple beds, while on all the other routes, you sleep in tents. There are two main routes on the mountain: the Marangu and Machame. You may also want to consider the Rongai route as it is far less traveled. The Lemosho route is a good choice if you want a longer route (8+ days). Kindly visit our kili routes page.
